Q & A about Acupuncture

Does acupuncture hurt?!

Acupuncture needles are solid, and as thin as a few hairs.

The sensation ranges from nothing at all to a slight sting that disappears after insertion.  After the needles are in place, patients rest comfortably.

How many treatments will I need?

An optimal treatment plan will be suggested after your health evaluation and exam are completed.  Your treatment plan is based upon the degree of imbalances diagnosed and the length of the time the symptoms have been in place.

How long will it take to notice results?

Most patients report changes within 6-10 treatments.  Allowing appropriate time for acupuncture to reach the root of your symptoms is important.  Conditions that have been in place for longer periods may take longer to resolve.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?

Many insurance plans cover acupuncture treatment.  Check with your insurance carrier and learn the specifics of your plan.  In this clinic, we accept Carefirst BlueCross BlueShield. Feel free to send us your insurance information, we will help you to find out your acupuncture benefit. Please send email to honglin0819@yahoo.com.

How does it work?

The acupuncture meridian system runs through the body delivering energy to the organ systems.  This flow can be interrupted by blockages or buildups.  When the blocks are removed or the excess drained, healthy energy flow  returns and the organ systems receive the nourishment they need to function optimally allowing the body to heal itself.

Meditation & Mindfulness

Meditation……this is becoming a new buzz work in the health industry. More and more studies are published on how meditation not only benefits our overall health but can also improve memory, improve cardiovascular variables, decrease anxiety, decrease fatigue, decrease depression, tension, increase self-confidence, and improve your mindfulness.

I started meditating over four years ago and I will admit at first it is not easy.  The challenges that everyone has in the beginning are the same:

  • Carving out time every day to do it, making it a part of your daily routine
  • Getting the mind to be silent during the meditation (Did you hear all that mind chatter? How do you stop it?)
  • Am I doing it right? And how do I know the ‘best way’ to meditate?
  • Finding a support group to share your experiences, challenges, and insights with
  • How do I sit? If I sit in a meditation posture it hurts my hips, back, etc. How do I get comfortable?
  • Where should I meditate? How do I create a sacred space?

In this series this week I will explore each of these concerns and give you tools in order to make meditation an easy and playful thing you can easily do each day!

Stay tuned for more…..

Oy, My Aching Head

March 27, 2011

There are people who will tell you that they’ve never had a headache, don’t know what it feels like.  I envy those people.

I was always a headachy person, even as a child.  About ten years ago, though, things started to get much worse for no apparent reason.  I began to have very frequent, sometimes daily, severe, debilitating, prolonged pain in the head, always in the same regions.  The pain would get so unbearable that I would periodically have to flee to the emergency room for intravenous drugs.   So I embarked on the odyssey that most headache sufferers make-doctors, tests, preventive and abortive medicines, dietary changes, acupuncture, trigger point therapy, meditation, chiropractic, invoking the gods-most of us will try anything.  Unfortunately, nothing really worked for me. Just as The Situation defines himself by his abs, I became The Headache, defining myself by my pain rather than any other aspect of my being.  Headaches ruled and of course, cast their evil spell on everything–my work, my relationships, and my mood.

Then I was blessed to be referred to Phil by my internist.  Phil carefully analyzed my symptoms, taking into consideration the lay of my tight and somewhat twisted musculoskeletal landscape as no other health professional had.  We began a course of myofascial therapy and home care, and the results were profound.  Over time, the frequency and severity of my headaches lessened by some 80 percent by my reckoning.  I was able to stop the mostly useless medication.  Everything changed for the better.

Though I still have occasional flare-ups, which is the norm for chronic headache sufferers, I know that I can turn to Phil and his healing hands and that with time and intense work, I will get better and regain the capacity to enjoy the blessing of a life not dominated by headache pain.  There is no more precious feeling.  Thank you, Phil.

Enormous Strides

March 30, 2011

I am a 65-year-old quadruple amputee who in 2008 lost all of my extremities as a consequence of a life-threatening blood infection.  After three months in ICU, I knew I faced a long recovery.

I also knew that I needed the best physical therapy I could find (and a lot of work on my part) if I were ever to regain my mobility, my independence and the strength to enjoy a full life.

After my husband and I moved to The Irene apartment complex in Chevy Chase MD, I soon learned that a physical therapy and wellness company was operating a facility in our building. I decided to try them out, though I was not sure then if they had the expertise to help someone with special needs like me.

It took me over 20 minutes to walk, using a walker, from my apartment to Phil Tavolacci’s TAVO Total Health Center on the16th floor when I started.  Today, I make the trip in less than three minutes without assistance.  With my prosthetic legs, I can climb stairways independently and I take long walks of several miles.

Phil helped me in less conventional ways as well, including exercise sessions in the swimming pool and using myofascial release (MFR) to restore function and feeling to my right residual leg which was partially paralyzed by a blood clot, post-amputation. I’ve been in the TAVO program almost three years now and I can do pretty much what I want to do.  I even drive myself wherever I want to go in my new specially equipped car!

I attribute my success in large part to the personalized attention, expertise, professionalism
